2023 has taken a very dramatic turn for the family of Irma van de Weijer from Heeze. Their dog Wobke ran off in panic on New Year’s Eve and has been missing ever since. Every owner’s nightmare.
What started as a pleasant evening celebrating New Year’s Eve quickly turned into a drama for Irma on Sunday. “We were with friends. At one point my husband went home to let Wobke out. When he opened the door, she ran away. He was able to call her back at first, but when there was another bang, she ran off. .”
So Irma soon received a phone call. “My husband said he ran after her, but she was just too fast. I immediately drove over to help with the search.” And they weren’t the only ones. “The entire neighborhood helped with the search that evening and I quickly posted a message on Facebook. That post was shared almost 300 times.”
“When I got home I saw I had a missed call.”
But all without success. “We didn’t sleep a wink on the night of New Year’s Eve. We sat on the couch at home, hoping that Wobke would come back.” That didn’t happen and so the search resumed on Monday. “We put up flyers and even searched for her with sniffer dogs. They still smelled her on the route she knows, but apparently she went off the known path somewhere.”
That appears to be the case, because good news finally arrived on Tuesday morning. “We were first searching in the neighborhood further away. There people were said to have seen a stray dog. But there was no Wobke to be seen. I wanted to leave it alone for a while and go back later in the day. But when I got home, I saw that I missed a phone call.”
“When I picked her up, she started squealing with joy.”
A phone call from Someren, to be precise. There, about 10 kilometers away as the crow flies, people saw a black and white dog. Walkers from Mierlo took the animal home and soon heard that a similar dog was missing in Heeze. “They sent me a photo. I immediately saw that it was Wobke and I drove that way with a bouquet of flowers. I am more than grateful to those people.”
Especially since Irma had almost given up hope. “This morning we were like, as long as we just find her. In whatever condition.” She had actually never dared to dream of this outcome. “When I picked her up, she started squealing with joy. She is back home. Alive and healthy. And now she can rest.”
