Dog Goofy in critical condition in ICU, owner is looking for witnesses to collision

A nightmare Friday afternoon for Carin from Den Bosch. Her dog Goofy was hit by a motorist on the Rompertsebaan, but the driver drove on. Carin is diligently looking for witnesses, because Goofy is now in intensive care at the animal hospital in Waalwijk. “Goofy lay completely stiff and with his neck thrown back. I never thought to question witnesses.”

It all started around five o’clock Friday afternoon, during a walk along the Rompertsebaan with her three dogs. In addition to Goofy (a Pomchi, a cross between a Pomeranian and a Chihuahua), she also had her other two small dogs with her. Goofy is the youngest of the three at eight months. “It really is a treasure of a beast.”

During her walk she also walked right past the pharmacy to pick up medicines. “When I wanted to walk home again, I saw a woman with two very large dogs. So I waited a while, because my dogs bark at everything.”

“I tossed my dogs in the air because the dogs snapped at them.”

She didn’t move on until the woman with the two big dogs was ahead of her, because she had to go that way herself. But when the big dogs turned around and saw Carin’s little dogs, they came running after them anyway.

“That woman was dragged by her dogs. I stood on the side of the road and swung my dogs into the air, because the dogs snapped at them. I wanted to prevent them from getting bitten.”

At that moment, Goofy slipped out of his harness and ran off onto the Rompertsebaan. One of the big dogs also broke free and ran away. “I ran to a supermarket myself because I couldn’t keep up with Goofy. I secured the other two dogs there and called 112.”

When she came out again, the woman with her large dogs had left. But at that moment Carin was told that her dog had been hit by a car and that the driver drove on.

“He has no brain damage and no broken neck, which is somewhat positive.”

“There were a lot of witnesses at the scene of the collision, but I was in shock at the time. Goofy lay completely stiff and with his neck thrown back. I especially wanted to go to the vet as soon as possible and never thought for a moment to ask witnesses what they had seen.”

She now especially hopes that witnesses will report so that she can find the driver of the car. She is offering 1000 euros for the golden tip, has put up posters and made an appeal on social media. But she hopes above all that the driver reports himself. “This is going to cost me a lot of money, I hope to work it out with the driver and the insurance.”

Goofy is still in intensive care, connected to equipment with all kinds of wires and an IV. His paws are bandaged. The animal is making ‘minimal progress’. “We now know that he has no brain injury and no broken neck, which is somewhat positive. But they have said that we should not pin ourselves down to it, it remains critical.”
