The 13-year-old dog Bindi has had to do without the brace he normally wears on his right hind leg for days. The aid helps the long-haired crossbreed to walk and also prevents his recently sustained injury, a torn cruciate ligament, from getting worse. Owner Rieta (75) is now searching city and country for the brace, but so far it seems to have disappeared from the face of the earth.
“I heard him scream loudly, he didn’t take another step”
It was a few months ago that things went completely wrong while walking Bindi, at their strong spot near the small beach of IJmuiden. “He was walking behind on the field,” Rieta remembers well. “And suddenly I heard him screaming loudly. There he was and he didn’t take another step.”
Too old to operate
An animal ambulance must be involved to get Bindi to the vet. He then quickly sees that the cruciate ligament of the right hind leg is torn. Since the four-legged friend is already quite old, his owner chooses not to operate on him. “Then he would have to go under anesthesia,” Rieta explains. “Maybe he should be in a crate for a few months. This is probably his last year of life. That should be a bit of fun.”
A brace on the right hind leg appears to be an excellent alternative that Bindi can use without any problems. But for a few days now the tool has gone missing. An additional problem is that Rieta’s memory sometimes fails her and she cannot remember exactly when the brace went missing. Either Bindi has lost it somewhere outside or it is at home somewhere. However, a thorough search turned up nothing. “But yes, I have a four-year-old grandson,” sighs Rieta. “He can, so to speak, put a sandwich in the video device, so…”
Risks without a brace
Meanwhile, without a brace, Bindi runs considerable risks, is playful and sometimes just sprints on the beach. “That can further tear the cruciate ligament,” says Rieta. So it is important that the brace surfaces as quickly as possible. Rieta secretly hopes that someone will find it somewhere on the beach. If this is indeed the case, the aid can be delivered to the Velsen Animal Ambulance.
