The left’s handling of the Ukraine war resulted in the second resignation of a functionary in Brandenburg within a few days.
One of the state spokesman for left-wing youth, Jonathan Wiegers, announced his resignation on Saturday. On Twitter and Facebook, he justified this with the party’s handling of internal allegations of sexual assault and its position on the Ukraine war. Wiegers wants to remain a member of the youth association. He was also a member of the State Arbitration Commission of the Left.
Left country manager Stefan Wollenberg regretted the exit. State Vice President Justin König had previously left the party, citing the Ukraine course as the reason.
Wiegers wrote in a statement: “I cannot and do not want to be part of a party that denies Ukraine its right to self-defense.” be,” he explained. “The left has no future like this.”
Leading figures engaged in “active Kremlin propaganda for the war criminal Putin”. He directed these allegations against, among others, the left-wing member of the Bundestag Sahra Wagenknecht and the co-head of the left-wing parliamentary group in the Bundestag, Amira Mohamed Ali. Wagenknecht and feminist Alice Schwarzer had organized a demonstration against arms deliveries to Ukraine. While the top left had distanced itself from the demo, Mohamed Ali wrote on Twitter about a powerful signal for peace negotiations and against arms deliveries.
König – also a member of the Left Youth Spokesperson’s Council – justified his resignation with this demo. “Of course we regret every exit,” said state manager Wollenberg on Saturday. The decision should be respected. But: “You have to lead the debate.”
