Does the SPD member vote still tip the coalition?

The coalition agreement for Berlin is in place: SPD co-chairman Raed Saleh (left to right), current mayor Franziska Giffey (SPD), CDU leader Kai Wegner and CDU general secretary Stefan Evers

The biggest hurdle before the start of black and red is the member vote of the Berlin SPD.

18,566 comrades can vote by post on the planned alliance. The ballot papers must reach the party headquarters by April 21 at 11:59 p.m. and will be counted on Sunday, April 23. At least one fifth of those eligible to vote (3714) must attend.

While the Jusos are campaigning for NoGroKo and a continuation of the coalition with the Greens and the Left, an SPD group made up of members of parliament, ex-senators and ex-state secretaries is fighting for black and red in the #BesserMitUns initiative: “The election result speaks for itself. It is therefore clear to us that something has to change in the way we govern.”

The Berlin CDU will vote on the future alliance at a party conference on April 24 – then the appointment of the five Senate members around the future Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (50) will also be determined.
