Does the Fire TV Stick work without Amazon Prime?

Amazon’s Fire TV Stick is a popular and inexpensive extension for TV devices. But can I actually do something with the streaming stick even if I don’t have an Amazon Prime subscription?

If it says Amazon, is it only Amazon? At least with the company’s popular streaming dongle, that’s not the case. Even without a Prime subscription (costs 69 euros per year), you can use the Fire TV stick and various apps. TECHBOOK explains the possibilities and limitations.

Streaming on the Fire TV Stick without a Prime subscription

On the Fire TV, users can install some apps that are completely separate from the Prime subscription. Films and series come from:

  • Netflix
  • Disney+
  • RTL+
  • sky ticket
  • YouTube
  • ARD media library
  • ZDF Mediathek
  • DAZN
  • Spotify

You even have the option of receiving Live TV via the Fire TV Stick without a Prime subscription. To do this, however, you need access to services such as waipu.tv or Zattoo, which are also available as an app on the stick.

Of course, you can also access Amazon’s entire film and series database. Each title then costs money to play. A current cinema film, for example, costs around 5 euros to rent. However, you will not be able to access Amazon Music without a subscription.

Caution: You don’t need a Prime subscription, but you do need an Amazon account. Without this, the Fire TV stick will not work! You can read with us whether a Prime subscription is worthwhile for you.

Is it worth buying the streaming stick without Prime?

If you want to make your TV smart, you can use the Fire TV Stick even without a Prime subscription. Various sources are then sent wirelessly to the TV via the HDMI port. But you shouldn’t ignore the competition from Google and Apple either. The Fire TV Stick is currently a good choice, especially because of the price (from around 30 euros).
