Empty promises: internal documents leaked

Just a few months ago, Tesla announced that it would produce 5,000 vehicles a week in its Gigafactory in Germany with 10,000 employees. An indication that alluded to various factors: Tesla’s order books are full, the employees are productive and the factory buildings are busy. A message that, according to Business Insider, also caused some uncertainty among the German competition. However, when it comes to big news from Tesla, there’s often a catch. Elon Musk, head of the electric car manufacturer, keeps announcing great things, but in many cases is ultimately unable to deliver. Well-known examples of this are the promises of autonomous driving or the cybertruck.

Internal documents that were leaked to Business Insider, as well as consistent statements from various Tesla employees, now show that the production numbers in Grünheide are apparently not as high as claimed. The car manufacturer is said to have only reached the 5,000 mark once, namely in March 2023. Employees report in unison that this should have been a one-off event. Extra shifts are said to have been put in for this because the factory tour was to take place shortly afterwards. Since then, the 5,000 mark is said to have remained untouched.

Internal production target actually lower

The realistic and internal production targets would be well below 5,000 vehicles per week. The documents from July and August are intended to show that the production target here was around 870 vehicles per day and thus 4,350 cars per week. Overall, 650 fewer vehicles were planned for the week than the US carmaker originally announced. And even with this goal, the company is said to have difficulties. As excerpts from the internal documents show, even the lowered production target was not achieved on various days. On July 25, for example, just 692 cars rolled off the assembly line in Grünheide. A few days later, on July 28, there were at least 806 cars – and still not enough. As a result, the company is said to have lowered the angelich production target again, namely to 750 vehicles per day. This means that the internal production target per week would even be less than 4,000 vehicles.

staff shortage

The reason for the lower production targets is said to be a significant shortage of staff. The automaker has difficulty filling shifts and there are complaints from employees about a significant increase in workload. In addition, sick leave in production is expected to increase noticeably, as people familiar with the matter tell Business Insider. Tesla recently laid off hundreds of temporary workers. In addition, the summer holiday season would also cause difficulties for the car manufacturer due to its ambitious production targets, according to Tesla employees.
