Documentary The Pogmentary: Paul Pogba’s big disappointment with Manchester United

The Pogmentary Documentary Preview

In his “Amazon” documentary “The Pogmentary”, which will be released on June 17, Paul Pogba expressed his disappointment, among other things, at what he saw as insufficient attempts by Manchester United to bind him longer. The 29-year-old leaves the “Red Devils” after a total of six years on a free transfer. Juventus Turin is considered a likely new (and old) employer of Pogba. “The Athletic” published impressions from available documentary preview material on Thursday, which shows that the decision to separate is primarily a result of disappointed expectations and a relationship that has ended.

It is not always clear from this at what point in time midfielder Pogba made what statement. However, the relationship between the 2018 world champion and Man United, which is already considered complicated, is becoming clear. An important part of the broadcast is also Pogba’s longtime and now deceased advisor Mino Raiola, who wanted to negotiate a new contract for his client in the summer of 2021. Pictures showed how Raiola was on the phone with Pogba, who was on vacation in Miami, and exchanged views on the same project – obviously with an unsatisfactory result for both of them. For Man United it was about a year ago: extend, sell – or let 2022 go for free. In the end it was the latter option.

“Paul, you are in a very special situation,” Raiola said, handset in hand, about Man United, according to the portal. “You have no idea. You have no idea. (…) They really want you to stay. To me, the offer doesn’t reflect that. I told them, ‘If you want him to stay, don’t make that offer.’ I’m going to make them understand that if they really want you to stay and they want to build a project around you, they need to do things differently this time and put the money on the table.”

Pogba, in turn, said: “You’re bluffing. How can you tell a player you really want him and then not offer him anything? I’ve never seen that.” Raiola, with the phone on his ear, said: “We have to try to make you feel as good as we do in the French national team. You are different with them. Do you understand? You are another Pogba in the Manchester United team. It’s not normal.” And further: “In the French team you are the real Pogba, the Pogba of Juventus, the Pogba that everyone loves. There is something about Manchester that is blocking you.”

Pogba: No help from Manchester United – refusal to City

Elsewhere in the documentary, Pogba lamented that United “didn’t help” him and “didn’t care” about how he was doing after an injury. In one of the last scenes, the two-footed actor became clear what thought drives him now. “My thought is to show Manchester that they made a mistake by waiting to offer me a contract. And to show other clubs that Manchester made a mistake by not offering me a contract.”

“How can you tell a player you really want him and then not offer him anything? I have never witnessed anything like this”

According to The Athletic, there have been two offers from Man United that are said to be worth more than the previous £290,000 a week. This makes Pogba one of the highest paid players in the Premier League. There can therefore actually be no question of “nothing”, as Pogba is said to have articulated in July 2021. “How can you tell a player you really want him and then not offer him anything? I’ve never seen that before,” he asked. In 232 appearances for the traditional English club, the veteran managed 39 goals and 51 assists. He recorded the highest market value of his career at 100 million euros in the summer of 2019 – this has now reached 48 million euros.

In another sequence, agent Raiola Pogba indicated that a return to Juventus, who signed the footballer on a free transfer in 2012 and sold it to United in 2016 for the then-record sum of €105m, was not an option. “No no. Juventus can’t afford you anymore. I’m here. I’m also meeting with Paris and I’ve already had two meetings with Barça. The market is like the sea: up, down, up, down,” emphasized Raiola in a video call. At the end of May, it was announced that Pogba was said to have rejected Manchester City. Instead, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain would duel for him. And there are currently increasing reports that a comeback in Turin is imminent.
