Documentary about notorious guerrilla fighter from Holland fascinates, but remains a ‘Tanja Nijmeijer for dummies’

What is a girl from Denekamp in Twente doing in the Colombian guerrilla army FARC, in a bloody battle that is ‘not hers’? Several films, countless news broadcasts and a handful of books – including a recent book by Tanja Nijmeijer herself – have already pondered this question. Tanja – Diary of a guerrillera by the acclaimed German filmmaker Marcel Mettelsiefen adds little to what a minor Nijmeijer follower already knew. Nevertheless, the documentary, in cinemas from Thursday, sends the viewer home with fascinating questions.
