Doctors Without Borders: terrible cold at night at Ter Apel

The asylum seekers who had to sleep outside at the application center in Ter Apel last night were “terribly cold”, according to Doctors Without Borders (AzG). The aid organization sees that the lower temperature has “huge influence” on the living conditions of the people there.

For MSF, the blankets under which the asylum seekers lie cannot really be called blankets, because they are so thin and small. “And this is only the beginning of late summer, so it’s only going to get colder.” Many people would have pain in their bodies and joints due to the cold.

The first responders provided medical aid to about 15 people this morning. These are mainly people with large open wounds or pus on their legs. Those wounds would usually be the result of poor hygiene at the application center and the long journey people have already made before that.

A person with an open wound was taken to the emergency shelter inside the fences because he was too vulnerable for the situation outside.
