Long-term use of paracetamol can be harmful to health, an infectious disease specialist, chief physician of the Leader-Medicine medical center, Yevgeny Timakov, told RBC.
Earlier, the journal Circulation published a study by scientists from the University of Edinburgh. They found that long-term use of paracetamol increases the risk of heart disease and stroke in hypertensive patients by 20%.
“Paracetamol is not such a harmless drug. It can cause drug-induced hepatitis and hepatic encephalopathy associated with acute liver damage. Therefore, to abuse paracetamol, like any other drug, I would highly recommend to no one, ”Timakov told RBC.
He noted that he does not even know in which cases doctors can prescribe a long-term use of the drug.
