The demand for products and services exceeds the supply. The raw materials needed for food are scarce and the demand for gas is increasing. Supermarkets use a lot of gas and electricity to keep products at a certain temperature. Consumers notice this increase in costs in the price they pay for products. In addition, consumers are also affected by the increase in gas and electricity prices. And now that the groceries are also becoming more expensive, they get even more burdens.

Rising prices of commodities, oil and gas pushed inflation upwards. Gas and energy prices were on average 75 percent higher in December 2021, according to Statistics Netherlands.

It’s already more expensive

Supermarkets have had a good turnover in recent years. The fact that we were all in lockdown and could not eat out during the holidays has undoubtedly had a positive effect on the turnover of the supermarkets. These are among the essential stores and as a result they were one of the few stores that remained open. According to NielsonIQ, supermarkets achieved a turnover of €44.7 billion in 2020, the first corona year. That is an increase of 11.2 percent compared to 2019, the year in which corona was only a beer brand for most.
