Summer is the season for many people to take it easy. It is less busy at the office or in your own company and you may still be going on holiday. Use this period to reflect on your work. Are you doing something you still enjoy? Do you want to get more out of it? Experts tell you how to use this summer as a moment of reflection.

Then there is little room to think about whether we still enjoy our work, says Marloes Halmans of The Happy at Work Agency, a company specialized in career coaching and coaching of starting entrepreneurs. “If you start to listen more to your gut and follow that, you will see that you will make completely different choices in your work.”
To get to that feeling, we have to go on vacation. Or at least take a few weeks off. “You don’t suffer from daily work stress for a while and you don’t have to meet expectations. This way you really have time to zoom out and discover what you want in your career.”
Taking the whole summer off from work
Growth strategist Josiene Borgers owns Winning Impact and always takes the entire summer period off to break free from her work as an entrepreneur. “To find out what you really want and what you would do if there were no obstacles, you have to find the silence.”
At the beginning of the year, Borgers plans the free period and determines her work goals based on that. “You simply determine what you have to earn that year and see how you can achieve that in ten months instead of twelve months. That gives so much more space. Many entrepreneurs are only busy with working hours, do not plan well and therefore also have no room to take long time off.”
What is six weeks now? That period is really not going to make a difference in your career.
People who work in paid employment can of course take a break for a few weeks less easily. But give it a try, Borgers says. “I’ve worked for large international companies and I know that sometimes you feel like you can’t go away for long. But what is six weeks? That period really isn’t going to make a difference in your career.”
According to Borgers, real rest is valuable for every worker. Suddenly you see how you can solve certain problems or why you are always so restless. “We have to do so much all day long, we have forgotten to listen to our intuition. We find ‘silence’ just vague. But if you don’t look for peace, you only hinder yourself and your potential. That is a great shame. “
Go on holiday alone and look for a different environment
Halmans also says that you won’t get there with a week of rest under the Spanish sun. “I often see people in my area complaining about the same things again in September. My advice is: go on holiday alone. If you go with the family, you are still older and partner. If you go with a friend, then you reflect on her. Going on holiday alone actually works like a retreat. You have lost your frame of reference. It must also become uncomfortable for a while, then you let go of what you think you are and discover who you want to be.”
To arrive at these answers on holiday, you really don’t necessarily have to take a yoga mat with you to the campsite, says Borgers. “Some think that they should or should immediately start meditating on yoga. They make it much too big of a thing. During my holiday I go into nature a lot, go for a nice walk or cycle. That way I automatically gain new insights.”
It must be too painful to go back to the life you led after your vacation.
Nor is it necessary to go to a distant destination, says Halmans. “Just by looking for a different environment, you break the rhythm and patterns of home. Try to write down what you find important in your work, in your life. Just grab a pen and paper and see what happens. “
Are you afraid that nothing will come of the change? Then the pain is not great enough, says Halmans. “It must be too painful to go back to the life you led after your vacation. Only then will you feel the motivation to really change something.”
