From August 1, 2023, after-school care fees for 3rd graders will also be dropped in Berlin. A change in the law is required for this. The deadline for applying for the new vouchers is already running. Many parents ask themselves: What do we have to do now?

On April 25, the Senate passed the law on the exemption from cost sharing for grade 3 in supplementary support and care. This will be discussed for the first time in the House of Representatives on Thursday.

The amended law is intended to relieve many families financially. Around 35,000 students could benefit. The after-school care center has been free for classes 1 and 2 since 2019.

For the law to become valid, it must pass at least one more reading. Time is running out.

“Because the responsible youth welfare offices continue to practice the previous procedure for the time being, it makes sense to apply for a voucher,” says a spokesman for the Senate Education Administration when asked by the BZ.

Invoices that the authorities send to the parents would become obsolete after the decision of the House of Representatives.
