Hoofddorp residents who sometimes cycle on the Waterwolfpad in the north of the city will have to take a detour for the time being. Yesterday morning the path led through a pipe break full of sewage. Today it appears that it will be difficult to repair that breach.

“The pressure pipe fracture on the Waterwolfpad is in a difficult position, namely deep underground and under a cycle path. That is why we are going to install an above-ground emergency pipeline instead of repairing the fracture,” the Rijnland Water Board said in a press release.
There is currently no more sewage water flowing from the so-called ‘pressure pipe’, because it has been closed. The water is diverted to Zwaanshoek.
Went wrong before
It is not the first time that a break has occurred in a pipe under the Waterwolfpad. In September 2022, the wastewater flowed into the nearby ditch, just like now. The fracture could then be repaired.

At the beginning of November last year things went wrong again. The Water Board then warned the neighborhood about odor nuisance. A spokesperson told NH today that he does not yet know why a pipe bursts so often at this location. “We are investigating that now.”

While a permanent solution is being sought, a temporary emergency pipeline is now being constructed. That work started today. The pipe will be laid on the grass between the cycle path and the ditch and will be approximately 200 meters long.
It is unclear when the neighborhood can use the cycle path again. “That could be today or tomorrow, but also next week.” Local residents will most likely have to look at the temporary above-ground pipeline for quite some time. The local council expects that it will take some time before a permanent solution is found.
