The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom’s Cybersecurity Center warns in his weekly review about the scam spreading on Facebook.
The threat is said to target especially user accounts used to manage the Facebook pages of companies or associations.
In a typical contact connected to this scam, the user receives a message via Facebook Messenger from a person pretending to be the technical support of Facebook’s background company Meta. The message may threaten to freeze the account or page, for example due to copyright infringement, if the user does not take the required measures.
The message includes a link, which the user is prompted to click. However, the link does not lead to Facebook’s own address, but to something that looks almost the same.
– Typically, a fake page disguised as a login page waits behind the link, on which the entered user IDs and verification codes go into the hands of the criminal, the Cyber Security Center warns.
With the credentials obtained, the criminal can hijack the Facebook page for his own use.
Fraudulent messages have been sent, for example, from an account called Alex Sp Busines. In messages, the recipient is often addressed with the words “Dear admin”. The message may also have started with, for example, the code “Track#12X34Y”.
