From Novak Djokovic’s point of view, the previously tense relationship with Wimbledon final opponent Nick Kyrgios has also improved thanks to his support in the vaccination debate about the Serbs.
“When it was really difficult for me in Australia, he was one of the few players who spoke out and supported me and stood by me,” said the defending champions ahead of Sunday’s final against the Australian. “That’s something I really appreciate. I respect him a lot for that.”
The 27-year-old Kyrgios had initially clearly criticized Djokovic, eight years his senior, for his behavior during the corona pandemic. However, when the unvaccinated Serb was denied entry to Australia earlier this year, he received support from Kyrgios.
Kyrgios speaks of “bromance”
The Australian had previously said that Djokovic now has a kind of “bromance”, a friendly relationship between men. “I don’t know if I can already call it a bromance, but we definitely have a better relationship than it was before January this year,” said Djokovic after his four-set semi-final win over Britain’s Cameron Norrie. The 20-time Grand Slam tournament winner is aiming for his seventh title at Wimbledon.
Djokovic dodged a question about a bottle, the contents of which he apparently inhaled in the round of 16 victory against Dutchman Tim van Rijthoven. “Magic potion. That’s all I can say. It helps,” said the Serb. “You’ll find out soon, but I can’t talk about it now.”
