Tennis star Novak Djokovic has had turbulent weeks. The Serb, who is not vaccinated against the corona virus, tried to travel to the Australian Open in Melbourne with the help of an exception. After his expulsion, the 34-year-old could have changed his mind, according to an insider.
Novak Djokovic gambled away his chance at the 21st Grand Slam title, which his closest competitor Rafael Nadal in Australia was able to win impressively. At the same time, the Serb loses his status as the world number one for the time being, Australian Open finalist Daniil Medvedev will be at the top of the ATP ranking at the end of February.
If you believe his biographer Daniel Mücksch, Novak Djokovic could have rethinked. Mücksch, whose book “Novak Djokovic – A Lifelong in War” will be published in March, told “ServusTV”: “I think from what you hear from his environment, he is getting vaccinated.”
‘Rafael Nadal’s 21 drives him on’
One of the possible reasons could be personal ambition. “Rafael Nadal’s 21 is what drives him, no question,” said the biographer. Like Roger Federer, Djokovic himself has won 20 Grand Slams so far.
Ultimately, however, the question arises for Djokovic as to which tennis tournament he will be allowed to take part in in the future. At the French Open, the next Grand Slam on the tennis calendar, only fully vaccinated people are allowed to compete. For Djokovic, there are initially only ATP tournaments like in Dubai or Doha.
According to Daniel Mücksch, the 34-year-old would not be vaccinated against the corona virus for the image alone, which has suffered considerably as a result of the entry theater in recent weeks: “This outsider role is very much anchored in his character. There is a nice quote of him saying: Not all champions are made in the country clubs of the rich.”
