Novak Djokovic is skipping the preparatory tournament in Adelaide before the Australian Open in Melbourne.

Unfortunately, he was not physically ready to compete again before the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, the tennis star wrote on Instagram. The 38-year-old played his last tournament game to date on November 8th against Lorenzo Musetti. After his final win against the Italian in Athens, Djokovic had to miss the ATP Finals due to a shoulder injury.

“This is very disappointing for me personally, as I have such fond memories of winning the title there two years ago,” wrote the 24-time Grand Slam winner from Serbia about his withdrawal from the tournament in Adelaide, which begins next Monday. “I was really looking forward to returning as it really felt like a home game.”

Focus on Melbourne

Djokovic said his focus is now fully on preparing for the Australian Open. “I look forward to arriving in Melbourne soon and seeing all the tennis fans in Australia.” The main field starts the tournament on January 18th.

Djokovic has already won the title ten times in Melbourne, most recently in 2023. Last year he had to give up against Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals after one set due to a torn thigh muscle.
