Thousands of war refugees from Ukraine arrived in Berlin on Thursday well into the night. 2,600 refugees got off trains at the main train station.
Another 2,080 people found their way to the federal capital by bus. This emerges from the situation report published on Friday by the social administration.
The determined arrival figures are therefore somewhat lower than in the days before. However, the social administration pointed out that many other refugees from the Ukraine war reach the city with private cars or other means of transport.
According to the information, the country temporarily accommodated around 900 of the newcomers. That’s less than the other days this week. Several thousand other refugees were taken to other federal states by bus.
“The provision of buses by the federal government for onward transfer to the federal territory is beginning to improve,” it said. In the course of Friday, up to 2,500 people should be driven to other federal states.
The Berlin Senate expects further improvements from a new arrival center Ukraine at the former Tegel Airport.
The Governing Mayor Franziska Giffey (SPD) announced on Tuesday that this should go into operation at the end of the week. According to the social administration, an exact date has not yet been set. “We will open as soon as possible,” said a spokesman on Friday.

It is planned to register up to 10,000 arriving refugees from Ukraine in the center every day and to make a binding decision as to which federal states they will travel to.
Several hundred employees are needed for this, including 80 Bundeswehr soldiers to help. According to information from the project management, processes were rehearsed on site on Friday.
