Now that the dispersal law has been passed, municipalities must sit down to distribute the reception of asylum seekers. Each province will be told by State Secretary Eric van der Burg how many shelter places need to be arranged. The assignment for Brabant, where there has been relatively little shelter so far, will be quite a task.
Brabant is one of the provinces that still does not receive (nearly) enough asylum seekers, together with North and South Holland. In the coming months, Brabant municipalities will have to jointly look for 14,689 places. Nationally this concerns 96,000 places.
How does the distribution law work again?
- At the beginning of the year, the State Secretary determines how many places are needed per province. Provinces and municipalities sit down to divide the assignment received. They have until November 1 to do this.
- The State Secretary takes stock. If not enough places have been registered, he will designate municipalities that must make places available.
- The decision on the distribution of asylum seekers must be taken before December 31.
The State Secretary has also given each municipality a guideline number for how many reception places should be created.
How many asylum seekers a municipality must accommodate depends on two factors. Namely: how many inhabitants does the municipality have and how rich are the inhabitants. The following applies here: the more inhabitants and the richer, the more people need to be accommodated.
Waiting for privacy settings…
There is explicit reference to a target figure, because municipalities must divide the provincial task among themselves. For example, a municipality can propose to arrange so-called ‘special reception places’ (for example for unaccompanied minors). Other municipalities then take over regular childcare in return. Any existing places, such as the asylum center in Budel, count.
In the coming months, there will be a lot of effort to search and consult if the Brabant municipalities do not want to resort to coercion.
MORE NEWS ABOUT THE SPREAD ACT:
There was a lot of discussion about the distribution law for a long time. Why was it even invented?
Municipalities that provide more shelter than the minimum required can receive a fair amount of money for this.
