The disruption that paralyzed the government service DigiD system on Tuesday was caused by large-scale DDoS attacks. This was stated by a spokesperson for Logius, the institution responsible for the functioning of DigiD, to the ANP news agency on Wednesday. You can log in to various other government sites via DigiD.

During a DDoS attack, a server is overloaded with data traffic and therefore becomes overloaded. Several government services could not be reached on Tuesday. DDoS attacks are carried out on government systems every day. According to Logius, the fact that the network has become overloaded this time is due to the “size and breadth” of the attack.

DigiD is the system that allows citizens to log in to various government sites, such as the Tax Authorities or municipalities. Most of the affected government sites were able to log in again after a few hours on Tuesday evening. It is unclear from which angle the attack came. Logius has launched an investigation.
