The long legal dispute between star striker Kylian Mbappé (26) from Real Madrid and his former club Paris Saint-Germain entered the next round on Monday. The lawyers of both parties presented their arguments before the labor court in the French capital Paris and initiated the next level of escalation. A preliminary decision in the trial, which involves more than 200 million euros, is expected on December 16th.

PSG is demanding compensation of 180 million euros from its record goalscorer, who moved to Madrid on a free transfer in 2024 when his contract expired. Including a further claim for damages, the sum could even rise to 240 million euros if the Champions League winner is proven right.

According to French media who were on site at the trial, the background to the argument is a move to the Saudi top club Al-Hilal SFC in the summer of 2023, which Mbappé rejected. The club from Riyadh is said to have offered a transfer fee of 300 million euros for the 2018 world champion. However, Mbappé did not want to go into the desert. However, he assured that he would not move without a transfer fee, which happened a year later.

This is what Kylian Mbappé’s former club PSG will do

Mbappé, for his part, accuses his former club of, among other things, having “mentally burdened” him when he was removed from the squad due to his decision not to extend his contract. His brother Ethan Mbappé (18), who moved from Paris to LOSC Lille in 2024, also suffered from it. The captain of the French national team wants to get 260 million euros from PSG. 55 million euros of this are outstanding salary payments and bonuses that Mbappé had previously demanded.

In October 2024, Mbappé was ruled in favor of his salary claim by the French League Association’s appeal committee (more on the details). PSG had referred to an oral agreement, which is why they were of the opinion that they did not have to pay the sum. A little later, the LFP disciplinary commission actually decided that the lawsuit was inadmissible (see article). In April of this year the sum was confiscated from the French champions (see article). In this context, PSG announced that it would go to the labor court.
