According to the Russian news agency Interfax, the Wikimedia Foundation, which maintains Wikipedia, has been fined a total of 8.4 million rubles (about 93,500 euros) by the Russian court.

Russia has imposed a total of seven fines on Wikipedia, the most recent of which was 2 million rubles (about 22,200 euros). The fines have been issued on the basis that the service does not agree to remove state-prohibited content from their armed forces.

The latest settlement concerned an article dealing with an armed forces unit operating in Ukraine. According to Russia, the article contained confidential information about the location of the unit and their equipment.

Wikipedia is an online open encyclopedia that is one of the few independent sources of information in Russia. This activity has not yet been banned in the country.

– We do not have plans to block Wikipedia’s operation in our country yet, Russian Minister of Digital Services Payments Shadaev stated to Interfax.

Wikimedia has stated in the past that complaints from the Russian authorities are not in accordance with their policies. The foundation has not commented on the latest fine.
