The Walt Disney Company purchases from Epic Games, the company behind the popular online game, for 1.5 billion dollars, more than 1.39 billion euros. Fortnite. Disney reported this on Thursday a press release. The two companies will work together to create a “games and entertainment universe” with games, shows and characters from Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars, among others. The investment still needs to be approved by regulators.
In addition to the gaming experience that Disney wants to offer, there will also be the opportunity to shop in the new ‘universe’. “This marks Disney’s largest ever entry into the gaming world and presents significant opportunities for growth and expansion. We can’t wait for fans to experience the Disney stories and worlds they love in groundbreaking new ways,” wrote Disney President Bob Iger.
To make all this possible, the Unreal Engine will be used, which was developed by Epic Games. This is a software that gives video game developers the ability to build entire worlds in games. It is now also used in television and film.
Cooperation
There are enthusiastic sounds from Epic Games about the new capital injection. “Disney was one of the first companies to believe in the potential of bringing their worlds together with ours in Fortnite,” said Epic CEO Tim Sweeny. “Now we are working together on something completely new.”
Sweeny is referring to the collaboration that Disney previously entered into with his company. Fortnite players could already play with characters from Marvel, Star Wars and Indiana Jones.
