Disney + brings cheaper subscription to Germany

Disney+ has grown strongly in Germany since its launch in March 2020. Now the streaming provider has announced a new subscription. It’s cheaper but comes with ads.

According to the latest quarterly figures, Disney+ has almost 130 million subscribers worldwide. So far, you have had two subscriptions to choose from in Germany – a monthly subscription for EUR 8.99 or an annual subscription for EUR 89.90. In the future, however, another subscription is to be added, which is said to be somewhat cheaper due to advertisements.

Disney + subscription with advertising probably only in Germany in 2023

As Disney + officially announced, the new subscription model should be available in the USA later this year. The streaming provider would also like to launch the new offer in other markets, but a little later. A global start – including in Germany – is therefore only planned for 2023.

In Germany, advertising-financed streaming offers are still the exception. Well-known examples are the free subscription to RTL+ or Joyn, which not only shows advertising, but also limits the scope of use. But neither of them cost anything.

Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ have so far relied on ad-free offers. The subscriptions are correspondingly more expensive. Even the provider Disney+, which has only been on the market in Germany for two years, has already had a price increase. In the beginning, the subscription only cost 6.99 euros a month or 69.99 euros a year. However, with the start of the “Star” division and new licensed titles, the provider was no longer able to maintain the price. Nevertheless – compared to Netflix, where a subscription with reasonably acceptable streaming quality costs at least 12.99 euros a month, Disney+ is still cheap.

Why is Sky showing ads but not Netflix and Amazon Prime? We discussed this question in the video:

Prices not yet known

The most important question about Disney+ subscription plans remains unanswered. Because so far the company has not said how expensive the advertising-financed version should be. What is certain is that paid access with advertising is only worthwhile if the price savings compared to the ad-free offer are correspondingly high. Disney + would have to make the new subscription very cheap to create a distance to the 8.99 euro offer. Or the conventional subscription becomes more expensive. In principle, Disney+ does not rule out the latter, after all the licenses and production costs for new content have to be refinanced.
