FC Bayern benefited twice from the video assistant in Glasgow. Above all, a penalty scene remained controversial.

There was seven minutes of stoppage time in the second round of the game of Bayern in Glasgow. The reason: a longer use of the video assistant. What happened? In the 54th minute, Bavaria’s Dayot Upamecano brought his opponent Arne Engels to the ground in Munich’s penalty area at 2: 0 for guests (final score 2: 1).

Upamecano had only played the ball during a clarification campaign, but then Engels had increased on the foot. Referee Jesus Gil Manzano initially decided against a penalty, but Videoschiri Carlos del Cerro Grande spoke up.

After a long check, he sent the impartial to the screen and had the scene checked again. DAZN expert Michael Ballack was certain: “This is a penalty.” To be amazed at the ex-national player, Gil Manzano remained in the decision not to give a penalty. Even after the game, Ballack did not deviate from his opinion: “He clearly steps on his ankle, so that’s actually a foul. What does it actually mean? It is a foul. In midfield it is probably whistled.”

Ex-referee Manuel Gräfe contradicted Ballack on the platform X, wrote there: “Top by Gil Manzano not to be guided by the Var. (..) Upamecano clearly plays the case and has to drop the foot somewhere.”

The scene was also controversial in Great Britain. The English ex-referee Keith Hackett spoke of a “bad decision” at the “Football Insider” portal. Former Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart, on the other hand, said at TNT Sports: “I think Upamecano is first on the ball, which is the right outcome of the scene.”
