Discovery+: price and content of the streaming service

After the major merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery, the company is now bundling its combined power in the Discovery+ streaming service. Here’s what you should know about the offer.

With Discovery+ there is another provider on the hotly contested streaming market. The service has also been available in Germany since June 28, 2022. What initially seemed a bit nimble with an offer consisting mainly of documentaries could still become a dangerous competitor for Netflix, Disney+ and Co. Both Discovery and WarnerMedia are behind Discovery+ – and thus one of the largest film studios in the world.

What is Discovery+?

Discovery+ is the combined power of WarnerBros Discovery after WarnerMedia acquired the other media giant. In order to bring the streaming offers together, even the streaming service HBO Max, which is well established in the USA but technically problematic, would be scrapped.

Since the platform did not exist in Germany anyway, the content will remain with Sky for the time being. Of course, many films and series from Warner could optionally migrate to Discovery+ at some point. So far, the resolution is limited to Full HD, 4K is not yet possible.

So far, Discovery+ has been available via a Sky-Q receiver and many other smart devices. Current Smart TVs from Samsung, LG or Apple offer a corresponding download function. The app can also be used on older televisions via Google Chromecast, the Amazon Fire TV stick or Apple TV.

The Content of the Streaming Service

So far he has streaming service a clear focus on non-fictional content such as documentaries and reality formats. Some originals are also already on offer. Genres such as lifestyle, true crime, technology and science are represented. At the start of Germany, Discovery+ advertised, for example, with an exclusive show about Daniela Katzenberger: “Katzenberger @work – liquid manure instead of glamour”. In it, the reality star swaps the luxurious Malle life for working on a farm. Over 700 pieces of content are already listed on Discovery+ and there will certainly be more in the future.

There is also a wide range of (live) programs from various channels. In Germany, these include:

  • Animal Planet
  • Discovery Channel Germany
  • Home & Garden TV
  • DMAX
  • TLC Germany
  • HGTV Home & Garden
  • TELE5
  • Eurosport 1
  • Eurosport 2

The Discovery+ offer also includes a large part of the content broadcast by the station, including sports events. The streaming service is thus broadly based from the outset.

This is how much Discovery+ costs

As with many other streaming services, Discovery+ allows you to pay both monthly and annually. The annual subscription is a little cheaper overall. There is also a subscription with and one without advertising.

The price for the ad-supported monthly subscription is 3.99 euros per month, while the yearly version costs 39.99 euros. Without advertising, the whole thing is of course a bit more expensive. Users then pay EUR 5.99 per month and EUR 59.99 per year.

It is also possible to test Discovery+ for free. A Sky-Q membership includes 12 months of Discovery+ at no additional cost. If you want to test the service outside of a Sky subscription, you can do so completely free of charge for seven days.
