Disappointing second World Cup day for skaters Schouten and Scheperkamp

After a successful first day at the World Championship distances with North Holland silver for Irene Schouten and Merijn Scheperkamp, the second day did not yield any results. Schouten seemed to take gold in the team pursuit with Marijke Groenewoud and Joy Beune, but the Orange team was disqualified. Beune’s ankle was briefly visible and that is not allowed.

In the last stage of the team pursuit, Schouten and co rode to gold in 2:52.65. Afterwards, the joy quickly turned to grumpy. The trio was informed by national coach Rintje Ritsma during their interview with the NOS. Canada took full advantage and still got gold.

Next to stage

Merijn Scheperkamp from Hilversum had good hopes for gold beforehand, but only finished fifth in the 500 meters. Jordan Stolz raced to the medal of honor. Laurent Dubreil (silver) and Wataru Morishige (bronze) took the other spots. Femke Kok surprisingly became world champion in the women’s 500 meters.

The World Cup distances will last until Sunday.
