Disappointing AZ loses top position after losing top match against Feyenoord

AZ did not succeed in winning the top match against Feyenoord. The Alkmaarders still took the lead through Jens Odgaard. That margin was nullified by Orkun Kökcü, Sebastian Szymanski and Danilo Pereira: 1-3. As a result, AZ lost the lead to PSV.

Riechedley Bazoer had disappeared from the starting line-up compared to the lost match against Apollon Limassol. As a result, Jens Odgaard was again in the lead. It was Jesper Karlsson, who first fired on Feyenoord’s goal. His long shot went just wide of Justin Bijlow’s goal. A phase followed in which both teams had good opportunities. Odgaard shot into the hands of Bijlow and a bet by Sebastian Szymanski ended up on the post. The Alkmaarders got away well there.

It was AZ that took the lead. A gossamer cross from Pantelis Hatzidiakos was headed into the goal by Jens Odgaard: 1-0. The euphoric feeling disappeared like snow in the sun. After a foul by Sam Beukema on Santiago Giménez, referee Danny Makkelie awarded a penalty. This was then cashed in by Haarlemmer Orkun Kökcü: 1-1. Before half time, former Feyenoord player Jordy Clasie had a great chance after fumbling in the defense. He shot just wide of the target from close range.

Dangerous Szymanski

After the break, the Alkmaarders scored the first goal. Dani de Wit was completely free in the penalty area and hit the mark. The AZ midfielder was also clearly offside, so the goal did not go through. A few minutes later, Szymanski scored a valid goal. Goalkeeper Hobie Verhulst let the ball slip through his hands, making it 2-1 for the Rotterdam team.

Change in rush hour

Moments later, the Pole was again dangerous with a hard shot. Verhulst was able to turn this bet very well. Trainer Pascal Jansen tried to force something in the final phase with a tactical conversion. Odgaard went to the side for Bazoer, so that Dani de Wit played in the striker. This turned out not to have the desired result.

Danilo Pereira scored brilliantly, making the grapes even more sour for AZ. The substitute Brazilian shot the ball stiffly into the corner: 1-3. The Alkmaarders then tried to score, but the score remained unchanged. Due to the defeat, AZ drops to the shared second place with Feyenoord. PSV is the new leader with one point more. Ajax can take over the lead again if it beats Excelsior.

AZ setup: concealed; Sugawara, Hatzidiakos, Beukema, Dekker, Kerkez; Reijnders, Clasie, D. De Wit; Sugawara (Lahdo/69), Odgaard (Bazoer/74), Karlsson (Van Brederode/69)
