‘It would be nice if someone from the area said: let him ride with me for a day.’ With this call it started on social media last year. The daughter of 81-year-old Dirk Burger from Petten was looking for a Christmas present for him, but did not know what to give. Until she realized that she would only really please the former truck driver if he could drive a truck one more time. Three months later, his wish comes true.
‘When he talks about his life as a driver, his eyes shine again and the beautiful stories from abroad and driving on the beer truck come loose’, his daughter wrote in December in the Facebook group ‘You are a real Pettemer als’.
The now 81-year-old Dirk Burger from Petten used to drive the truck at home and abroad, she explained. Later he brought drinks to cafes, beach bars and restaurants for various companies. His daughter gave him the pleasure of sitting on the truck one more time and hoped someone could help.
Old trail
Last week, his wish could finally come true. And he had a great day, his daughter told NH Nieuws. “They more or less went on my father’s old route. So he recognized a lot of people. They had a cake with a former colleague of his.”
The day will probably continue. “He wants one more time,” said his daughter. And that will happen soon, she knows: “They have agreed to do it again before the summer.”
