After “The Exorcist: Believer” was released on October 5, 2023, the next offshoot “The Exorcist: Deceiver” should follow. The “Exorcist” trilogy follows directly on from the 1973 original. Horror fans could have seen the second film in theaters in April 2025, but it has now been announced that director David Gordon Green has left the project. It is questionable whether 2025 can still be met as the start date.
The reason for Gordon Green’s exit is said to be a busy schedule, as “Variety” reports. The US director is currently working on “Nutcrackers” starring Ben Stiller and the fourth season of the HBO series “The Righteous Gemstones”. Other media outlets speculate whether the disastrous reviews may have influenced Green – and he is trying to salvage his somewhat good reputation thanks to three “Halloween” films.
The film’s release has been postponed indefinitely
Universal is said to have replaced the budget for the “Exorcist” follow-up film, originally scheduled for April 18, 2025, with that for a Michael Jackson biopic by Antoine Fuqua. The film studio and production company Blumhouse is currently looking for a replacement director; It is not clear when work on the film will continue.
“The Exorcist: Believer” was not as successful as expected with almost 300,000 cinemagoers in Germany, a US gross of 65.5 million dollars and a worldwide box office of around 136 million dollars.
