Large train station for a new flight connection that may be short-lived. United’s first flight to Washington was celebrated at BER with a ceremony on the visitors’ terrace.
The US airline connects the two capitals with each other. The flight lasts nine hours and the Boeing 767-400 has room for 240 passengers. However: The connection will only be offered until the end of the summer flight schedule. It expires at the end of October.
Means: In five months the connection will be over again! It is still unclear whether it will be resumed in 2024.
US Ambassador Amy Gutmann (73) is happy anyway: “Berlin is the favorite city in Germany for the Americans. Now they can fly direct without having to change planes.”
Brandenburg’s Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (61, SPD): “As of today, the White House is moving closer to the Federal Chancellery.”
Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (50, CDU): “BER is our gateway to the world, we have to open it wide! 140 direct connections must not be the end of the road!”
The town hall boss to BZ: “Every direct connection counts, so that Berliners don’t always have to change trains in Frankfurt or Munich.”
