In the case of a German consular officer Uwe Herbert H. (60), who is said to have killed his husband in Brazil, the Berlin public prosecutor’s office is now investigating.
This was announced by a spokesman for the authorities on Monday on request. Attempts are being made to obtain the necessary documents from Brazil via legal assistance, it said.
The Berlin authority had previously tried to hand over the case to the Coburg public prosecutor’s office. She gave the man’s place of residence as a reason. The lawyers in Bavaria had rejected the request in mid-September – on the grounds that they were not locally responsible.
The consular officer is suspected of having killed his Belgian husband on August 5. The 60-year-old himself had stated that his husband fell after an argument under the influence of alcohol and drugs. The police doubt that. Traces of blood were found in the apartment.
The suspect was arrested in the Brazilian metropolis of Rio de Janeiro at the beginning of August. Rio prosecutors later charged him with murder and ordered him to be held in custody, which a Rio court upheld.
According to the judiciary, the 60-year-old had already returned to Germany at that time. Because a court in Rio had ordered the release of the German. The public prosecutor’s office let a deadline expire, it was said as a reason.
