‘Dip or is the viewer fed up?’

Peter Gillis sees his reality show’s ratings plummet following controversy over his rude behavior during a TV holiday to Africa. “Is this because of the bad publicity?”

The reality soap Massa is Kassa by the controversial Peter Gillis did not score well on SBS 6 last night. The episode managed to achieve a score of 568 thousand viewers (10 percent market share), which is considerably less than usual. Does the viewer give up after his rude behavior during his TV trip in Africa?

Lower ratings

Tina Nijkamp, the former channel boss of SBS 6, finds the lower viewing figures striking. “It is striking that the Gillis family has fewer viewers for the first time than the very moderately scoring De Perfecte Verbouwing with Nicolette Kluijver on RTL 4,” she says in her analysis channel.

With about a hundred thousand viewers less, Nicolette suddenly ends up above the Gillisjes with 584 thousand viewers (11 percent). “Will this score be related to the continued negative publicity or is it a one-time dip?”

‘I don’t watch anymore’

Private boss Evert Santegoeds, who also works for SBS 6, is in any case done with it, he says in the podcast Strictly Private. He is baffled by Peter’s behavior in Africa. “That’s that blunt thing that irritated me earlier at that Christmas market in Germany. I don’t watch it anymore, but the ratings are fine.”

He continues: “People have not had enough of it yet, but I have dropped out. He was at Talpa of the week and had a good conversation there, he says. “And what a nice company.” I didn’t know he knew about that, about nice companies. Yes, it will all continue for a while. Talpa refuses to cancel him as long as there is no conviction.”

Jerky and inappropriate

However, it is no longer just about misconduct in his private life, says colleague Jordi Versteegden. “We can just see this on television. This isn’t a way to treat people, is it? Shouldn’t you just condemn that as a broadcaster?”

Evert: “It is extremely jerky, inappropriate and rude, but well: that is apparently also the charm of the program, that it is such a farmer. Well, farmers are not like that at all. That it is such a prolet!”
