Jürgen Klopp’s era at Liverpool FC is coming to an end. Reds icon Dietmar Hamann has now named what he sees as the ideal successor for the team manager: Xabi Alonso.
“I think if anyone can do it, it’s Xabi,” said Hamann in an interview with the “talkSPORT” portal and delivered his arguments immediately afterwards: “He is loved by people, he was a brilliant player and what he does in Leverkusen, is extraordinary.”
The TV expert emphasized that succeeding Klopp would certainly not be easy. “The pressure and expectations will be great, but I believe that they will have a team – if they keep it together – that will challenge for the Premier League title next season,” said Hamann.
Alonso is currently at the top of the Bundesliga table with Bayer Leverkusen. The Spaniard’s contract with the Werkself runs until 2026. The 42-year-old has been closely linked to Liverpool FC since Klopp announced his resignation.
Liverpool FC: Hamann names Klopp’s formula for success
“People talk about [Roberto] De Zerbi (coach of Brighton & Hove Albion, editor’s note), [Ange] Postecoglou (Tottenham Hotspur coach, editor’s note),” Hamann looked at the ongoing speculation: “Liverpool is different and he [Alonso] knows the club, he is loved by the fans, for me he would be the ideal choice. I don’t know for sure whether he sees it that way.”
According to the 2005 Champions League winner, special qualities are required to be considered for the job at Anfield.
“If you look at Liverpool, Liverpool is a special and unique club and I think Klopp’s success is due to the relationship he has with the players, the fans and the city, he has the mentality in that “The whole city has changed,” said Hamann.
