Jewish Groningen women and their life stories

In the exhibition The Jewish-Groningen Women’s Gallery teach you the know the life stories of thirteen special Jewish women from Groningen. They are the life stories of writers, politicians and doctors, who are also daughters, mothers or life partners. Orthodox Jewish or secular. They all live or work in the province of Groningen for part of their lives. In traditional Judaism of the nineteenth century, almost every Jewish community had a women’s association, sometimes even several. In the same period, a social movement arose that strives for equal rights for women. Jewish women also want to be more than ‘the Yiddish Memme’. While labor law and education were important topics in the nineteenth century, voting rights became an important focal point in the early twentieth century.

Even in the second half of the twentieth century and even in the 21st century, obstacles still have to be overcome to achieve equal treatment. Some Jewish women are especially active in their own community and bring about special changes there. There are also Jewish women for whom their origins or faith do not play a major role in their daily lives or in the realization of their ideals. The exhibition was created in collaboration with the Museum aan de A in Groningen, because of the exhibition Vraauwlu – Groningen people you want to know . The exhibition in the Synagogue can be seen until December 29.

Diederik van Vleuten comes with fifth solo

Diederik van Vleuten was almost eight years old when the first people landed on the moon. The grainy images of astronauts in white suits left an indelible impression on the young Van Vleuten. Just like the sights and sounds of Vietnam and Cambodia. And don’t forget Toppop. His worldview was largely determined by Asterix, Tintin and the knowledge from the Kijk. The power and meaning of memory, that is what Diederik’s fifth solo is about.

He wonders what, today, is left of the amazement, amazement and admiration of a little boy born in ’61. As with his previous four solos, including about the Dutch East Indies, the First World War and Churchill, Van Vleuten is again a storyteller par excellence in his show Year of manufacture ’61 .
