Remarkable political news from Austria: ‘Die Bierpartei’ (BIER) has become the third largest according to a poll by ‘Heute’. The party, which was founded in 2015, is satirical in origin. Her views include: a monthly barrel of beer per household, and a beer fountain in the center of Vienna. But the joke seems to be gradually becoming serious.
Die Bierpartei was founded in 2015 by Marco Pogo. That is the stage name of Dominik Wlazny, frontman of the Viennese punk rock band Turbobier. His project was created on a whim and is based on one of his songs with the lyrics: ‘If you like to be fat and drink a lot every day, then vote for us now, the Beer Party, we’ll abolish the alcohol tax’ .
However, the joke gradually became more serious. In 2019, ‘Die Bierpartei’ even took part in the Vienna municipal elections. Then she achieved 0.1 percent or as they put it themselves: 1 per mille.
Points of view
The party has ten serious and less serious positions. For example, she wants a beer fountain in the center of Vienna, and a barrel of beer for every Austrian family every month. Another point of view is ‘a person is a person, live and let live. Except Radler drinkers’. The party also advocates the abolition of closing hours in the catering industry. There are also non-alcoholic positions, such as the call for more rehearsal spaces in the cultural sector.

Marco Pogo also participated in the presidential elections in 2022 under his real name Dominik Wlazny. Then he took a more serious stance for the first time. He called, among other things, for more expert consultation and responsibility in the government. He ultimately received more than 300,000 votes, good for 8.31 percent and third place.
According to a new poll by ‘Heute’ among 813 eligible voters, Die Bierpartei would currently become the third largest party in Austria in elections, after the SPÖ and the FPÖ.
