Every Finn has a personal connection to the Maamme song.
Most of us think about how there is “no valley, no hill, no water dearer than the shore” when the first notes Fredrik Pacius echoes of the work.
Fewer, on the other hand, remember that the Finnish version is a translation. The original Vårt land poem is of course by Johan Ludwig Runeberg handwriting in Swedish.
In helmets, this comes out well, because the team’s goal stick Linda Sällström sings the Maamme song audibly in Swedish.
– We have a few Finnos-Swedes in the team. Some have sung in Finnish, but when I’ve sung loud enough in Swedish myself, I’ve gotten them to join in as well, Sällström laughs.
– Then it has been a bit about who sings the loudest.
In this tournament, Sällström has one more chance to convert the players with the language policy. Unfortunately, only his Swedish-speaking fighting partner Anna Westerlund is on the sidelines for Saturday’s match due to corona infection.
– During the national anthems, we already have a little mental advantage over the opponent, based on how much we live in it. It gives you such an extra boost.
