Netflixin Don’t Look Up can be considered a success by many measures. The film has been nominated for four Oscar nominations and has broken records on Netflix.
Now, in an interview with Variety, the film’s director and screenwriter Adam McKay sheds light on how one “hidden” scene has been filmed in harsh conditions.
At the end of the film, Jonah Hill’s character Jason digs out of the rubble that has emerged from a fatal comet collision. Jason shouts desperately at his mother at first. Confident of the morally questionable means in the film, Jason takes the phone from his pocket and describes himself.
– I’m the last person on earth. Everything is going to hell. Don’t forget to like and follow, he reports.
McKay says the scene was filmed in a single shot on the ugliest day of filming, which he said was “icy cold”. The scene is filmed in a parking lot near the production team’s office. Due to the good conditions, the director promised that if the scene went well, one shot would be enough.
Hill improvises, and the end result looks like this.
That scene will be seen during the final lyrics of the film.
– I like short scenes in the final lyrics of movies, the director says.
He notes that they are not suitable for all films, but in disaster comedy they are “pretty perfect”.
