Data security expert and research director of Adminize oy Sami Laiho Iltalehti regrets that only a few victims of online scams report the matter. According to Laiho, only a few percent of all victims – both private individuals and companies – make a report.
– I always tell my clients that no one blames the bank if it is robbed, Laiho states.
Skinny has told himself that he is one of the victims of the Vastaamo data breach.
The story continues below the video.
Silence only benefits criminals
According to Laiho, the lack of reports can be explained by the “incomprehensibly strong” stigma associated with being cheated.
– They don’t want to admit that they weren’t perfect.
In Laiho’s opinion, not making a report only serves criminals.
– It follows that scams are not taken seriously. We imagine that there are a few attacks per year, when in reality there are at least a few per day.
– People generally get the wrong picture of the situation, and the idea that this doesn’t concern me continues to perpetuate itself, Laiho continues.
Make a report
If you have been the victim of a data security breach, Laiho advises at least to notify the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom’s Cybersecurity Center.
– If it is a scam where money changes hands, you should always contact the bank or credit card company immediately. They are the only ones who can potentially do something about it right away, or at least can ensure that the problem does not expand, he points out.
