If the host’s bad jokes are discussed later, then this is usually a sign of a less than exciting party. The 96th Academy Awards were certainly an amusing affair, with few losers but many entertaining and touching moments.
If only it hadn’t been for Oscar presenter Jimmy Kimmel’s embarrassing jokes. Robert Downey J. was given a rude comment about his drug past, and there was a rather dull Auschwitz joke about Sandra Hülser and her nomination for “The Zone of Interest” (“In Germany they call it a romcom”). And later he made fun of Donald Trump, who had criticized his moderation style on social media.

It was all a bit much, which is why there was some malice online. But even at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, many people just wanted to laugh in pain. A (albeit harmless) joke at the expense of “Poor Things” – namely that the scenes shown as a preview for the film in the hall are the only ones that the audience can expect to see on the TV screen – was acknowledged by Emma Stone with a saying .
In any case, the camera caught her at that moment, as a Twitter video suggests. She says to the person sitting next to her more or less clearly: “What a prick” (What an idiot).
Until now, Kimmel, who has had his own successful late night show for years and is not considered the sharpest representative of his craft, was considered a safe bet at the Oscars, hosting for the fourth time after 2017, 2018 and 2023. The start with a “Forrest Gump” homage with a “Barbie” reference was actually promising. But in the end, Ryan Gosling as the singing Ken and wrestler John Cena as the naked laudator had the most laughs on their side. And that must inevitably always be the territory of the host.
It may be time for a new host next year.
