Yes and no! Actually, Die Ärzte were supposed to compose and record the title song for “Werner – Beinhart!”. But just at the time of the making of the animated film, which was released in cinemas in 1990, the band broke up (or rather took a kind of artistic break).
Farin Urlaub and Bela B got to work anyway, wrote “We need… Werner”, but avoided using the names of the doctors, only using the artist names Bela B and Jan. In retrospect, not only the musicians found the end product horrible , and the producers of “Werner” didn’t want to get used to the result either.
Instead, Torfrock, founded in 1977 by Klaus Büchner and Raymond Voß, was asked about. They produced the song “Beinhart”, which hit the spot with the line “Beinhart wie ‘n Rocker, beinhart wie ‘n Chopper” and also reached number one in the single charts in early 1991.
However, “We need… Werner” was still used for the cartoon slapstick, an adaptation of the successful comics by the artist Brösel, which was no longer as prominent. This is how the piece can be heard in the credits of the film.
The track flopped as a more urgently recorded single release (even touted as the film’s official single!) and is included in the boring long version on the soundtrack of “Werner – Beinhart!”. Incidentally, the B-side on the single was “Hau wech”, which can also be heard in the film.
