Did BVB pay more for Füllkrug than expected? Top 3 sale for Werder

“Image” report

On August 31st, just before Deadline Day, Werder Bremen lost Bundesliga top scorer Niclas Füllkrug to Borussia Dortmund. It was previously assumed that the Green-Whites received a fixed 13 million euros plus 2 million euros in possible bonuses. As a “Picture“Report now suggests, the income for the SVW is likely to be significantly higher than previously known. And BVB would have dug deeper into their pockets for the national player.

According to reports, Füllkrug was due a base fee of 15 million euros – and not 13 million euros. In addition, a further 3.25 million euros are possible, so that ultimately up to 18.25 million euros could flow from Dortmund to Bremen. Which, as they say, is anything but unlikely. As is often the case with transfers, the amount of the agreed bonus payments is linked to certain BVB successes. This means: Among other things, qualifying for the Champions League again.

If all the expected parameters are met, Füllkrug would no longer be the fifth most expensive departure in Werder’s history, but would be in the top three behind Diego (for 27 million euros to Juventus) and Thomas Delaney (for 20 million euros to BVB). “The package just worked for us. That’s why we implemented the transfer despite the little time we had left to maneuver,” explained Clemens Fritz, head of professional football, in a Transfermarkt interview in mid-September. The people of Bremen generated urgently needed income to improve their tense financial situation and to avoid possible conflicts with the licensing regulations.

Füllkrug himself recently explained via “Sport Bild” that the money factor played a significant role for his employer in his departure from the Weser. “It was mainly the constellation between Werder and me. Because the club has repeatedly emphasized that things are not looking good economically and that they need to generate income. There weren’t that many players who would have brought in a high fee,” reported the 30-year-old striker, who has so far managed six goals in 13 competitive games in a Dortmund jersey. Füllkrug is the second most expensive over-30 new signing at Westphalia.
