Sergio Gómez is experiencing a real high at RSC Anderlecht. The left-back is not the first former Borussia Dortmund player to make his breakthrough after his time at BVB. So do the black-and-yellows let their talents slip away too early?
Sergio Gómez only played three professional games during his stay at Borussia Dortmund. The Spaniard was initially considered a great hope for the future by the Westphalians. “Sergio Gómez is undoubtedly one of the strongest players of his year worldwide,” Dortmund’s sporting director Michael Zorc praised the full-back after his move from FC Barcelona to BVB in January 2018.
However, Gómez never got beyond the status of a perspective player at the Revierklub and had to be content primarily with appearances in the Dortmund U19 and U23 teams.
In order to give the left foot more match practice, BVB loaned Gómez to the Spanish club SD Huesca from 2019 to 2021.
Gómez is thriving under coach Kompany
The former U19 European champion was one of the permanent staff at the club from Aragon and thus played a significant role in promotion to the Primera División in 2020. Gómez also made 29 appearances in Spain’s top division the following season.
But instead of giving the now 21-year-old another chance, BVB decided to sell him last summer and sold Gómez to RSC Anderlecht for 2.25 million euros. The defender is one of the top performers in the Belgian first division team, which is confirmed by a look at the statistics. Gómez has already contributed five goals and eleven assists in 21 league games and is a real pillar of coach Vincent Kompany’s team.
Due to his convincing performances, the ex-Dortmunder has apparently played himself back into the focus of big clubs. As “TEAMtalk” reports, Chelsea are interested in Gómez’s services.
Does BVB give up its talents too early?
The rapid development of the Spaniard is strongly reminiscent of Alexander Isak, who switched from BVB to Real Sociedad in 2019. The attacker can prove his qualities in the Primera División. Isak scored 17 goals last season and finished sixth in the scorers’ list – ahead of prominent names such as Antoine Griezmann and Joao Félix.
While the Swedish striker would probably have no chance behind Erling Haaland despite his enormous progress at BVB, Gómez would certainly have been an option at left-back this season. After all, Raphael Guerreiro missed numerous games due to various injuries. With Nico Schulz and Felix Passlack, the deputies could not convince.
However, the level in the Belgian Division 1A is not comparable to that of the Bundesliga or even the Champions League. Nevertheless, it would certainly have been more than worth considering for Borussia Dortmund to test Gómez again in the professional team after his time at SD Huesca.
