Bidders from all over the world competed for one of the ugliest cars in the world – but only because one of the most beautiful women in the world was behind the wheel…

On Saturday, Princess Diana’s († 36) old Ford Escort was sold at an auction in Warwickshire, England for an incredible £737,000 (868,000 euros). The auctioneers previously thought the Escort RS Turbo S1 would fetch £300,000 but did the math without the bidders.

Four days before the anniversary of Diana’s fatal car accident in Paris, interested parties from Dubai, the USA and Great Britain fought a heated battle of words. In the end, a bidder from the northern English village of Alderley Edge, where many Premier League players live, won.

Diana had driven the car between 1985 and 1988, preferring it to the royal family’s Rolls-Royce and Range Rover. According to the auction house, the Ford Escort was even specially made according to her wishes and is the only black example. With 40,000 kilometers on the clock, the car should still make a few trips.

Because the princess also used another escort. The silver 1.6L Ghia saloon was auctioned last year for just over £52,000.

A chariot as popular with the people as Diana herself. With 4.1 million units sold, the Ford Escort was one of the best selling cars in Britain between 1967 and 2000.

PS: An old Ford Escort with no sovereignty behind the wheel costs around £10,000 these days.
