Just four days after the end of the World Athletics Championships, many athletes met again on Thursday (08/31/2023) at the Diamond League Meeting in Zurich. Javelin thrower Julian Weber showed a good performance.
The 29-year-old threw 85.04 meters in the crowded meeting and took third place. Although Weber had provided the best German result in fourth place at the World Cup, he could not change the fact that the German selection did not win a medal for the first time.
Jakub Vadlejch from the Czech Republic, third at the World Championships, won with 85.86 meters ahead of world champion and Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra (India/85.71 meters). Weber still had a chance of winning with the last throw, but had to be satisfied with 84.92 meters.
Hartmann seventh in Lyle’s win
Like in Budapest, pole vault star Armand Duplantis from Sweden tried three times in vain to break the world record height of 6.23 meters. He had already won the competition with 6.00 meters.
Three-time world champion Noah Lyles won the 200 meters in 19.80 seconds. The German record holder Joshua Hartmann, who had disappointed with the lead-out at the World Cup, finished seventh in 20.43 seconds. After a strong fifth place in Hungary, high jumper Tobias Potye only came in ninth this time. For the EM second from Munich it was only enough to jump 2.20 meters.
Now it’s off to Berlin
Both Weber and Potye will start this Sunday (September 3rd, 2023) at the traditional Istaf athletics meeting in Berlin. Gina Lückenkemper will not be there, the European sprint champion ended her season prematurely due to a virus infection.
