The Norwegian star runner Jacob Ingebrigtsen shattered one of the oldest European records at the Diamond League finals for track and field athletes in Eugene, Oregon.
The 1500 m Olympic champion won the mile in 3:43.73 minutes and was around two and a half seconds below the record set by the British Steve Cram in 1985.
Just missed the world record
The 22-year-old now missed the world record of Moroccan Hicham El Guerrouj, which has stood at 3:43.13 minutes for 24 years, by six tenths of a second.
The German 200 m record holder Joshua Hartmann (Cologne) took seventh place over 100 m in 10.30 seconds. Christian Coleman, 2019 world champion, won in 9.83 seconds ahead of Noah Lyles (both USA), 2023 world champion, and equaled his annual world best.
