DHL puts the first mega parcel center into operation in eastern Germany

Deutsche Post DHL opened the first mega parcel center in eastern Germany in Luwigsfelde (Brandenburg) on Wednesday. According to the company, it invested a low three-digit million amount in the location. The background to this is the growing number of parcels due to increasing e-commerce. In addition to the two locations in Obertshausen (Hessen) and Bochum (North Rhine-Westphalia), Ludwigsfelde is one of the largest of the 37 parcel centers in Germany.

According to the information in Ludwigsfelde, around 550 people are currently employed, and when full capacity is expected by the end of 2024, there should be around 600 jobs.

With the new parcel center, which has a sorting capacity of 50,000 items per hour, the two existing parcel centers for the Berlin area in Rüdersdorf and Börnicke could be relieved, said Tobias Meyer, Board Member for Post and Parcel Germany at Deutsche Post DHL Group.

Three years after the first groundbreaking, a 37,000 square meter industrial building was built, said Brandenburg’s Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (SPD). Now an even faster, more reliable supply is guaranteed. He described DHL’s announcement of 600 collective bargaining jobs subject to social security contributions as the right way to go. Good working conditions and fair pay are fundamental to attracting and retaining urgently needed specialists. (dpa)
