MT Melsungen is in the final 4 tournament for the DHB Cup. SG Flensburg-Handewitt is also one round further.
Melsungen, fourth in the handball Bundesliga, beat second division team TuS N-Lübbecke 30:28 (16:13) in the quarterfinals on Saturday evening (February 3, 2024) and can continue to hope for the first cup triumph in the club’s history.
After 1996, 2013, 2014 and 2020, it is the Hessians’ fifth participation in the final tournament, which will take place on 13/14. April will be held in Cologne.
Second division team from Lübbecke keeps up for a long time
In front of 2,356 spectators, Elvar Örn Jonsson was the best scorer for the favorites with ten goals, but they struggled for long stretches against the committed hosts.
The second division team held up well until the middle of the second half and could still hope for a cup surprise at 22:23 (46th minute). Only in the final phase did Melsungen show off his individual class and ultimately celebrate the deserved victory.
Flensburg wins against Hamburg
Later in the evening, SG Flensburg-Handewitt also moved into the semi-finals with a 37:25 (14:11) win over northern rivals HSV Hamburg.
The Flensburg team only had some problems in the early stages. The SG started the second half with a 4-0 run to make it 18:11 (33rd) and forced the hosts to take a very early timeout. Four minutes later, Johan Hansen scored with a fast counterattack to make it 22:12 and thus secured the preliminary decision.
